First time student (F and M) and exchange visitor (J) applicants have to pay the I-901 Student Exchange Vistor Information System (SEVIS) fee prior to applying for a U.S. visa.

Effective June 24, 2019 the I-901 SEVIS fee for F and M international students has been revised from $200 to $350 and for certain J exchange visitors from $180 to $200. The fee remains unchanged at $35 for J exchange visitors in the au pair, camp counselor and summer work travel program.

If a student or exchange visitor paid the SEVIS fee prior to implementation of the new fee, but is applying for a visa or is traveling to the U.S. after the new fee took effect, s/he does not have to pay the difference in fees.
