There are some items that are not permitted into the U.S. Embassy / Consulates. It is important for visa applicants to know this and avoid carrying such items to the Consulate for their visa interview. They do not provide a cloakroom to store these items. We may have to rely on hawkers to store expensive mobiles or laptops if we are not prepared. We are providing list of items that are not permitted into the U.S. consulate.

  • Sealed packages or envelops;
  • Suit cases and travel bags;
  • Large bags;
  • Mobile phones, palm tops, mp3 players, cameras, pagers and the like;
  • Radios;
  • Any electronic media like CD, pen drive, SD cards, cassettes or the like;
  • Laptops, tablet PCs;
  • Food or Water bottles (expect in certain exceptional cases and infants);
  • Any sharp objects;
  • Cigarette, cigar, or any tobacco products, matchbox, lighter, etc.;
  • Large opaque files that look like mini suit cases;
  • Remote controlled car keys;
  • Cosmetics (including but not limited to spray / perfumes, colognes and talcum / baby powder);
  • Umbrellas;

While the above is not a comprehensive list, this is indicative of what one should avoid. The security personnel at the Consulate have the discretion to screen out any other item that may not be listed here. It is important, especially for applicants traveling from outside the Cities where the U.S. Embassy / Consulates are located; to be aware of this and make sure they keep these items in a safe place prior to visiting the consulate.
