The consular posts across India recently resumed accepting drop box applications for renewal of all categories of U.S. non-immigrant visas. H/L and J applicants, subject to the presidential proclamation (10052) should additionally qualify for one of the exceptions as released by the Department of State on August 12, 2020. This list can be found here.

Earlier, the U.S. Department of State expanded the scope of drop box eligibility worldwide. Now, if all other requirements are met, applicants seeking to renew their U.S. visas on the same category qualify for the drop box if their most recent visa expired within the last 24 months. This relief is temporary and available only until December 31, 2020. This notification can be found here.

It is important to note that the application for visa along with supporting documents should reach the consular section at least 7 calendar days prior to 24 month deadline. For example, if the 24 month period ends on September 30, 2020 – the application should reach the consular section at the latest by September 22, 2020.

This is a welcome relief for many eligible U.S. non-immigrant visa applicants. We will continue to monitor and keep our readers updated on this subject.
