In a recent development, we have noticed that H & L visa applications are directed to the U.S. Consular posts in Chennai and Hyderabad.

Background

Until recently, H & L visa applicants requiring an in-person interview were able to schedule an appointment at any one of the consular posts in India. However, in recent times, we have noticed that all new interview appointments for H & L visas are routed to the U.S. consular posts in Chennai and Hyderabad. Additionally, the opening of a state-of-the-art U.S. Consulate building at Nanakramguda, Hyderabad, could be a possible impetus for the shift.

Change Only Affects Newly Scheduled Appointments

We have also noticed that existing appointments at other locations across India continue to be honoured. It may be recalled that applicants eligible for interview waivers (drop box) have the option to submit their applications, at any of the five Visa Application Centers (VAC) in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, and New Delhi. Alternatively, for a nominal fee, applicants can avail themselves of the convenience of dropping off their documents at designated locations in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Cochin, Jalandhar, and Pune for a fee of Rs. 850 per application.

As reported earlier, from October 1, 2023, onwards, the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in India have centralized the processing of most nonimmigrant visa interview waiver (drop box) cases to Chennai.

There is no official press release or notification on the above at the time of this writing. H & L applicants may continue to check availability of in-person interview appointments at other consular posts.
